New chefs at Alden-Houston’s 17 are Wesley Morton and Jami Kling. Morton is the new executive chef and hails most recently from Half Moon Bay, CA, where he served as executive sous chef for NAVIO Restaurant at the Ritz Carlton. Kling is the new executive pastry chef and comes to 17 from Bistro Moderne in Houston where she was executive pastry chef. 17 is located at 1117 Prairie downtown. Those Taverna guys from up in Conroe are opening at a new location at the old Chez George place at 219 Westheimer. Co-owner Richard Knight says the new restaurant will be called Feast and hopes to open in mid-March.

Think you’ve got a cocktail with moxie? Bartenders are invited to submit a punch cocktail recipe for the annual cocktail competition sponsored by Tales of the Cocktail. Recipes must be submitted by 5 p.m. on Monday, March 17. The official 2008 cocktail will be announced in early April. According to QSRWeb.com, Cold Stone Creamery will launch Cold Stone To Go on April 1, a made-to-order selection of treats that will include dozens of ice cream flavors and mix-ins. Each treat will be packed in new containers call Mine, Ours and Everybody’s. (Sounds like S, M, L to us).

A final reminder that the Wednesday market has been discontinued at Bayou City Farmers Market. Saturday still works from 8 am to noon, rain or shine. Location is 3000 Richmond in the back parking lot.

Taverna Winery & Restaurant in Conroe has a new executive chef. He’s Jimmy Mitchell, most recently at Gaido’s Seafood House in Galveston and trained at the Culinary Institute of American in New York. Chef/owner Arnaldo Richards at Pico’s Mex-Mex Restaurant, 5941 Bellaire Boulevard, is now serving fresh, whole, head-on, baby Gulf red snapper. Sweet Tomatoes is warming up the month of March with the return of its Creamy Tomato Soup and Grilled Cheese Focaccia, a unique version of a favorite childhood comfort food combination. And to conjure up even sweeter memories, the restaurants will debut the new Chocolate Peanut Butter Cookie Cups, warm and gooey cookie cups topped with peanut butter and chocolate chips that make even adults feel like kids again. Got kids? Want a free breakfast for them? Want to help other kids? Sweet Tomatoes is helping to teach children the important lesson that “giving is better than receiving” by inviting kids ages 12 and under to bring a new clothing item with tags attached to their nearest Sweet Tomatoes location on Sunday, March 30 from 9 a.m. to noon, during the restaurant’s Sunday Breakfast. All clothing items will be donated to the non-profit organization Kids in Distressed Situations (K.I.D.S). Each child who brings in an item of clothing during that time will receive a free kid’s breakfast meal.

The Texas Hill Country Wine Trail offers “Wine and Wildflower Trail,” April 4-6 and April 11-13. During this time, the hills come alive with Texas bluebonnet and Indian paintbrush during spring’s annual wildflower profusion.
