Inside My Table #95 | Excerpt
The Greenest Day of the Year
By Taylor Byrne Dodge
Hands down in my 25 to 35 crowd, the Irish Car Bomb (recipe below) is the drink of choice on St. Patrick’s Day.
And where should you go? McElroy’s is an authentic Irish pub enjoyed by many for its authentic Irish entertainment (bagpipes, anyone?), while the line at Kenneally’s is hardly a deterrent to visiting the always raucous Kenneally’s celebration. (Diehard fans sometimes wait for hours, and watching the Houston Fire Department shut down this establishment on St Paddy’s is just part of the show.) Across the street at the Red Lion Pub you can enjoy a plate of pub fare to wash down endless mugs of Guinness.
The Tipsy Clover is crowded in the Midtown area, while Pub Fiction and Dog House Tavern are close behind in terms of favorites. Live-music venue McGonigel’s Mucky Duck is a perennial Irish favorite, of course; note that there is a $16 cover on St. Patrick’s Day.

THE IRISH CAR BOMB
Offensive name, great drink.
1/2 shot Irish whiskey
1/2 shot Irish cream (e.g. Bailey’s)
3/4 pint Irish stout
METHOD: Float the whiskey on top of the Irish cream in a shot glass. Pour the stout into a pint glass and let it settle. Drop the shot glass into the stout. Chug.
