On the cover

Nancy Etheridge’s photographs have been exhibited during Art Crawl, Art on the Avenue, Florescence at the Museum of Fine Arts (where she won a Curator’s Award in 2004) and at Winter Street Studios in several shows. “My subject matter ranges from cowboys during a cattle roundup to flowers to close-ups like this cover shot which, to me, is very serene,” says Etheridge. “I appreciated the colors of the cup and saucer on the purple table and the doily was just such a thoughtful and nostalgic touch.” Readers can email Etheridge at nde3045@aol.com.

34 GO AHEAD MAKE MY COFFEE
Our caffeine-addled correspondent hit the Houston streets in search of the perfect cup of coffee. While at it, she also threw back more than a few cups of tea and hot chocolate, just to keep things interesting. Her verdict: It’s all about the barista’s skill in preparation, the sourcing and, okay, the buzz.

42 NOTES FROM THE COFFEE GROUNDS
We sent our writer to 10 area Starbucks locations to see if they are simply corporate clones in lock-step coffee-making conformity. But we were surprised. Sometimes, a Starbucks store succeeds in creating a unique culture that actually reflects a varied slice of Houston life.

46 CORKS: THE WHITES OF TEXAS ARE UPON YOU
Wine pro Randall McCrea and guest taster Kevin Simon go glass to glass in this point/counterpoint column. This issue, they taste and rate Texas white wines.

64 JUST DESSERTS: ON THE IRRATIONALITY OF C-RATIONS
Like the soldiers it fed, C-rations were complete, self-contained and expendable. Some, like the soldiers, were far better than others. Our writer ponders this strange intersection of crossed purposes—sustenance designed to aid in killing.
