34 COVER STORY: DINING WITH THE DEARLY DEPARTED

Latin America’s Day of the Dead is well known to Texans as a joyful acknowledgment of the cycle of life and a commemoration of departed friends or family that is centered around song, dance, fond memories and, yes, food. Is it a surprise to learn that dining with the dearly departed happens to be a nearly universal tradition? The true aberration is, in fact, a society that does not have some sort of feast or festival in which the living dine and commune with those who used to be among us.

64 JUST DESSERTS: BLUE PLATE PALATE

Genuine diners are not as easy to find as they once were. Interstate highways and chains like Cracker Barrel, Shoney’s and Steak-n-Shake along with über-truckstops such as Love’s and Flying J have killed many of the mom-and-pop cafes. To maintain a blue-plate palate, you have to go off the eaten path.
