Cupboard Love: A Dictionary of Culinary Curiosities by Mark Morton ($16.95, Insomniac Press) answers questions you haven’t even yet thought to ask. Who knew that the word pomegranate is related to the word grenade, that baguette is a cousin of bacteria, that soufflé comes from the same root as flatulence? If you love words and food, you will find this an entertaining work, stuffed full of stories behind familiar and not-so-familiar gastronomic terms. The original book was published in 1997; this is an updated and expanded edition. |
